Remembering 7 February 2009.
Instigated by a member of ABA(Vic) Inc on an international online forum for Blacksmiths and eagerly supported by the international community of blacksmiths, the Tree Project is the creation of a 9.985 metre tall forged stainless steel and copper gum tree in response to the Black Saturday fires in Victoria in 2009. This tree is a memorial to the 173 people who lost their lives in the bushfires, to honour the tireless people who defended others and to stand as a symbol of regeneration for the community. It will stand in Strathewen, one of the places worst affected by the fires.
Over 3500 leaves have been forged by blacksmiths across Australia and around the world. All components of the Tree have been forged including the 6.8m trunk forged from a solid piece of stainless steel 3.5m long and 300mm in diameter. All the Branches and twigs have been forged at the Barn.
